It is the top of the table clash in match number 50 of this 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as Delhi Capitals (DC) take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Both teams are sitting on nine wins and three losses after 12 encounters but CSK are at the top due to a better net run rate. A win for either side in this game will guarantee them a spot in the top two.
After the hiccup they had against Kolkata Knight Riders, DC bounced back and beat a strong Mumbai Indians (MI) side to continue their excellent run in this 2021 season. Their bowling has been the one that has been the one doing the heavy-lifting. Avesh Khan, Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada have formed a stunning pace trio while Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel combine to form a potent spin attack. The batting has fared quite well too. Against MI, the top-order failed and the middle-order made some vital contributions to take them over the line on a slow, low pitch.
On the other hand, CSK hit a small roadblock in their last game as they were blown away by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) batting line-up. CSK had put up 189 on the board but RR chased it down with 15 balls to spare. The MS Dhoni-led side did make a few changes and rested a couple of key bowlers but CSK were never in the game with the ball. However, they would like to brush that aside as the three-time champions have been in stellar form. Their top-order has been firing on all cylinders while the bowling has performed consistently as well.
Prithvi Shaw was fit and returned to the DC side for the game against MI. There is no update on the fitness of Marcus Stoinis and DC may well go in with an unchanged XI. Sam Billings could be considered and Steve Smith might make way.
Chennai Super Kings
Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo were rested for the game against RR and they are likely to return for this encounter. KM Asif limped off the ground and couldn’t complete his third over. Thus, Chahar might come in for Asif while Bravo is likely to replace Sam Curran.
Delhi Capitals: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (c & wk), Steve Smith/Sam Billings, Shimron Hetmyer, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Avesh Khan, Anrich Nortje
Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran/Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Josh Hazlewood
Shreyas Iyer: Shreyas Iyer didn’t feature in the first half of the tournament due to a shoulder injury and he has come in and batted beautifully in this UAE leg of the IPL 2021. The former DC skipper has played four innings and he has got three scores in excess of 30. His scores read 47 not out, 43, 1 and 33 not out and whenever each of those knocks (barring the 1 that he got) have come in wins. Iyer has brought calmness to the DC middle-order and has lent some solidity. Thus, he will continue to be the key.

Ruturaj Gaikwad: Ruturaj Gaikwad is batting like a dream at the moment. Everything he touches turns to gold. The Maharashtra-born batsman has now amassed 508 runs at an average of 50.80 and is striking at 140.33. CSK have been in trouble in two games in this UAE leg and Gaikwad has bailed them out in both of those encounters. Moreover, he has got solid starts in each of the five games in this second half and he has been magnificent in the UAE. His last eight scores in the UAE read 65 not out, 72, 62 not out (these three were in 2020), 88 not out, 38, 40, 45 and 101 not out (latest).
