After a week’s gap, the Vitality T20 Blast will resume on Friday, June 17 with sixteen teams in action. One of those eight matches will witness Middlesex Panthers taking on Surrey Lions in a South Group fixture at the Kennington Oval in London.
Surrey are coming into this game as the south group table-toppers and have been unbeaten in the competition so far. They have 13 points to their credit, having won six out of seven games and one ending in no result. Middlesex, on the other hand, are placed seventh on the table and are on a five-match losing streak. They have 6 points in the tournament with three wins out of eight games.
The two teams faced each other on June 9th at Lord’s – the home of Middlesex, where Surrey came out victorious by 20 runs. Can Middlesex pull off something special to end not one, not two but three streaks?

Middlesex had a great start to their Vitality T20 Blast 2022 campaign with three wins on the trot but then succumbed to five losses in a row. They’re placed seventh with six points and a net run-rate of -1.074. They need to get a move on quickly if they are to make the top four in the south group.
Middlesex have a pretty inexperienced batting unit, with Eoin Morgan also resting from selective games. Stephen Eskinazi and Joe Cracknell have been excellent at the top of the order but barring John Simpson, the lack of quality in the middle order has hurt them. Martin Anderson and Toby Roland-Jones have snared 25 wickets between them but the bowling attack remains ordinary.
Middlesex were hammered by 61 runs at the hands of Essex in their most recent fixture. Bowling first they conceded 186/6 and were bundled out for 125 with none of the batters touching the 30-run mark.

Sam Curran has been outstanding with both bat and ball in the ongoing tournament. The all-rounder has scored 186 runs across seven innings at an average of 27 and a strike rate of 142. The Oval in London has served some mixed pitches in the season. Twice the team batting first has crossed 170, with the highest of 228 while two matches have been low scoring.
The weather at the Oval on Friday is expected to be cloudy in the daytime with an 80% chance of precipitation but it drops to 25% at the night. The temperature will be around 14-20°C.
With a possibility of rain and the chasing side usually doing well here, batting second would be a better choice.
