South Africa will lock horns with Australia in a blockbuster semi-final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday. Both teams have enjoyed a very successful campaign so far, winning seven out of their respective nine matches.
Australia started the tournament pretty poorly, losing their first couple of matches in a disappointing way. But they bounced back in style and won seven matches on the trot.
South Africa, on the other hand, have delivered strong performances as well but they collapsed against India and also against a team like Netherlands, who are considered far inferior in quality as a side.
The Proteas are coming into this semi-final on the back of some very impressive performances in the league stage. Although they did collapse against India and Netherlands, their batting did fire on all cylinders in every other game.
The bowlers have also stepped up very well, picking up wickets and keeping the flow of runs in check in almost every department. But they need to be careful as they can't afford any more slip ups like they did against India and Netherlands.
It's not going to be easy against a mighty Australian team and they need to be at their best again if they want to qualify for the final.
Quinton de Kock is South Africa's highest run-scorer in this World Cup with 591 runs to his name, including four centuries. He is expected to take the attack on to the Australian bowlers in this match.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Gerald Coetzee has been a consistent wicket-taker for South Africa in this World Cup. He has picked up 18 wickets so far, striking 18.16 deliveries. He has a crucial role to play against a strong Australian batting unit.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Australia are on a seven-match winning run now. They haven't lost any match after losing their first two matches. The only time they came close to losing was during their match against Afghanistan, where they found themselves at 91/7 while chasing 292.
But Glenn Maxwell played a miraculous innings and propelled them home with a massive double ton. They haven't encountered any such blips after that but Australia need to go in with a cautious approach in this game as South Africa have a pretty strong bowling attack.
The Australian bowlers will also have their task cut out against the South African batters as their batting unit has been one of the best in the tournament.
David Warner is expected to be the highest run-scorer for Australia in this contest and has the best betting odds. He has amassed 499 runs in this World Cup so far, including two centuries and an equal number of fifties.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
With 22 wickets to his name at an average of 18.90, Zampa is the highest wicket-taker in this World Cup. He has bowled brilliantly throughout this campaign and is expected to do well in this contest once again. He has one of the best bowling betting tip.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Glenn Maxwell has a high chance of getting adjudged as the Player of the Match in this contest. He has been in sensational form with both bat and ball, scoring 397 runs and picking up five wickets.
The venue has been a high-scoring one and generally good for batting in the first innings. So, the team winning the toss should opt to bat first here.
The deck at Eden Gardens is generally good for batting but it does change with the progress of the match. There's help for new ball bowlers in both innings, but the spinners come into play more in the second innings of the match.
Scattered showers are expected on Thursday with temperatures hovering around 27 degree Celsius. Rain could cause some interruption during the match but we can still get a result with a reduced number of overs.
Both teams delivered strong performances in the league stage, but Australia have won seven matches on the trot and that's why they are high on confidence. Moreover, their batting and bowling units have momentum on their side and have more experience under their belt as well. Australia will start as the favourites to win this contest and progress to the final.
