Head-to-head: Sri Lanka have dominated Afghanistan in ODIs with seven wins in 11 matches. Afghanistan have managed to win on three occasions with one match ending in no result.
Best Bowling Figures: Thisara Perera registered the best bowling figures in AFG vs SL matches in September 2018 during the Asia Cup. He returned with the figures of 5/55 in nine overs.
Best Individual Score: Ibrahim Zadran smashed 162 runs off 138 deliveries with 15 fours and four sixes in Pallekele in November 2022 against Sri Lanka.
Last match: The two teams last faced each other in Asia Cup in September earlier this year and played out a thriller. Sri Lanka won the match by just two runs as Afghanistan got bundled out for 289 runs while chasing 292.
Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are scheduled to face each other in the 30th match of the ongoing Cricket World Cup in India. The match is set to be played on October 30 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune and it will commence at 2 PM IST.
Sri Lanka are currently at the fifth position with two wins in five matches. With big teams like England and Pakistan not stepping up, they have a great chance to stake a claim for one of the spots in semifinals.
Afghanistan, on the other hand, have also won two matches beating England and Pakistan and have a brilliant opportunity to threaten one of the top four sides with a win in this game.
Afghanistan began their campaign with losses against Bangladesh and India but they have won two of their last three matches and have momentum with them.
They literally thrashed Pakistan by eight wickets in Chennai chasing down 280-odd runs. A win in this match will literally help them climb them to fifth place and with a real shot at the top four.
Ibrahim Zadran loves to perform against Sri Lanka especially in the ODI format. Three of the top five highest individual scores in AFG vs SL ODI are registered by him and those are - 162, 106 and 98.
Zadran is also due a big knock as he has been getting constant starts and there is no better time in this World Cup for him to play a match-winning knock.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Rashid Khan has picked up six wickets in five matches so far at the World Cup. He comes into the attack in the middle overs and makes sure to turn the game on its head either by picking wickets or by keeping a lid on the run-scoring. Afghanistan wouldn’t mind his best effort against Sri Lanka yet again.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Injuries have hit Sri Lanka badly in this World Cup. First their skipper Dasun Shanaka got ruled out and were then followed by injuries to Matheesha Pathirana and Lahiru Kumara.
Angelo Mathews’ inclusion into the squad as one of the replacements worked wonders against England and now Dushmantha Chameera replacing Kumara will only bolster their bowling attack.
Like Afghanistan, if Sri Lanka manage to win this game, they will also bolster their place at the fifth place and will get a real shot at the top four slots.
Kusal Mendis has been in great form in this World Cup but hasn’t been able to convert his bright starts. The skipper would want to lead from the front with the bat in this crucial game.
Moreover, last time Sri Lanka met Afghanistan, Mendis scored 92 runs off just 84 balls with six fours and three sixes to his name.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Kasun Rajitha has played only three matches at this World Cup but his impact in the bowling attack has been huge. He played a key role in Sri Lanka beating the Netherlands picking up four wickets and overall has accounted for seven wickets thus far. His ability to swing the new ball will be crucial yet again in Pune.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
It is not easy to predict the winner of the player of the match award before the match but it really could be between Ibrahim Zadran and Kusal Mendis. Both players are due a big knock and could really take the game away from the opposition in a matter of overs with their batting. Bowler is not being considered for this award as the pitch in Pune is known to be flat.
Toss will play a crucial role at the MCA Stadium in Pune as dew will come in the evening make it difficult for the bowlers to grip the ball. Also, the team winning the toss might look to bowl first as defendind a score is not easy at this venue.
The MCA Stadium in Pune has hosted only one match so far in this World Cup. India chased down 257 runs without much fuss against Bangladesh in that game with more than eight overs in hand.
The pitch is likely to be conducive for the batters yet again and the side batting first will have to post a total in excess of 300. As far as the weather is concerned, sun will be out in the afternoon and there is no rain in the forecast at all.
It is tough to predict the winner of this match as both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are coming with solid wins over Pakistan and England respectively. But looking at the overall combination, Afghanistan just have a little upper hand over Sri Lanka in this game.
