India and England are all set to go up against each other in Match No.29 of the World Cup 2023 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
In World Cups, India and England have met eight times. India won three times while England ended on the winning side three times. Back in 2011, the teams also played a tied ODI in Bangalore.
In their previous meeting in World Cups, Eoin Morgan’s England beat Virat Kohli’s India by 31 runs at the Edgbaston in Birmingham.
India, led by Rohit Sharma, have been in red-hot form in the tournament. Having won all five of their matches with a net run rate of +1.353, the Men in Blue have hardly put a foot wrong.
Rohit’s men will be returning to action after a week’s break following their four-wicket win over Tom Latham’s New Zealand at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.
Virat Kohli has been in stupendous form in World Cup 2023. The hundred he scored against Bangladesh would have done his confidence a world of good.
He missed out on a century against the Kiwis, but his 95-run knock helped India secure victory. In five matches in the tournament, Kohli has scored 354 runs at an average of 118 and a strike-rate of 90.53.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Jasprit Bumrah has been a tough nut to crack in World Cup 2023. In five matches, the fast bowler has picked up 11 wickets at an incredible economy rate of 3.80.
Teams have been reluctant to take chances when Bumrah has bowled. In six ODIs against England, Bumrah has accounted for 14 scalps at an economy rate of 6.03 with a five-wicket haul to his name.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
England came into the World Cup as world champion, but they have not played like one in the tournament. Placed in the bottom half of the points table with a net run rate of -1.248, Jos Buttler and Co. do not have much room for error if they are to make their way through to the playoffs. Facing India would not be a walk in the park for England.
Joe Root enjoys batting against India and the numbers show that. In 19 innings from 21 matches against the Men in Blue, Root has scored 739 runs at an average of 46.18 and a strike-rate of 83.59 with three hundreds and as many fifties to his name.
In ODIs on Indian soil, Root has notched 467 runs from 11 matches at an average of 51.88 with five half-centuries.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
After Reece Topley was ruled out of the World Cup, Adil Rashid remains England’s standout bowler in World Cup 2023. On excellent batting pitches, Rashid has bowled at an economy rate of around 5.20.\
Against India, Rashid has picked up nine wickets from eight matches at an economy rate of 6.44 with a three-wicket haul to his name.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Joe Root is a strong contender to become the Player of the Match. The English batting is not in great rhythm, but the right-handed Root is someone who can counter the Indian bowling with his strong technique. If Root gets his eyes in, it will be tough to stop him.
If teams win the toss, they should opt to bat first since run-scoring under the lights in Lucknow has not been all that easy. Pacers are most likely to get a lot of assistance from the surface. India would not mind batting second as well since all their wins have come while chasing.
The pitch is expected to be a sporting one. Runs will be on offer, but bowlers will also be in with chances to make inroads into the opposition batting lineup. Batting, however, is expected to get difficult as the match progresses.
There is no chance of rain for the time being in Lucknow. Temperatures will be around the 32-degree Celsius mark. There will be 48 percent cloud cover, but they are harmless.
Given the current form of both teams, it is easy to pick India as the favorites. But one cannot rule England out simply because they are the defending champions.
The Brits will also be hungry for victories to break into the top four after not such a great start in the tournament. Keeping in mind all factors, it may be the team batting first that is likely to win.
