Delhi Capitals will take on Mumbai Indians in the second match of IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The two teams had contested the final of IPL 2021 where Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals to become the first team to win five IPL titles!
Delhi Capitals have been arguably the most consistent side in the Indian Premier League over the last few years. They finished first in the league standings in 2021, second in 2020 and third in 2019. It’s clear to see that Delhi Capitals have gotten better and better with every passing season and they will be expected to continue that upward trajectory in IPL 2022.
A shoulder injury to Shreyas Iyer kept him away from the field during the first leg of IPL 2022 which forced DC to appoint Rishabh Pant as captain. However, Pant remained in the role despite Iyer’s return for the second leg which prompted the DC management to persist with Rishabh Pant as their captain. Delhi Capitals have also had a strong auction this time around and will be eager to impress from the word go.
Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, are among the most successful teams in IPL history if not the most successful. In terms of IPL titles won, no one comes close to them as they have five of those in their kitty. Mumbai Indians’ captain Rohit Sharma is the player with the most IPL titles to his name (six in total) and they’d love nothing more than to continue being the household name that they’ve become.
Mumbai Indians spent a lot of money to bring back their young wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan, making him the most lucrative pick of the IPL 2022 mega auction. They were very inactive on Day 1 of the auction which left many to ponder about their strategy but ended up covering most bases by the end of the auction. Only time will tell whether MI will be able to repeat their heroics in IPL 2022. Home conditions should be an advantage though as the entire tournament is being held in Maharashtra.
As far as the head-to-head record is concerned, there’s little to separate the two sides. Mumbai Indians hold the upper hand with 16 victories but Delhi aren’t far behind and have won 14 matches. Delhi Capitals also defeated Mumbai Indians in both the matches between these two sides last season.
Wins: Delhi Capitals 14, Mumbai Indians 16
Last 5 matches: Delhi Capitals 2, Mumbai Indians 3
This is a difficult result to predict. There are several factors that favour both Mumbai and Delhi ahead of this game. Mumbai Indians managed to retain pretty much the base of their core but are weak in some other areas like some bowling. However, they will enjoy the conditions in Mumbai more than any other side. On the other hand, Delhi have a better squad on paper compared to Mumbai Indians and it’ll be interesting to see whether they can tempo early in the season.

Delhi Capitals will depend heavily on captain Rishabh Pant who will be tasked with executing captain Ricky Ponting’s instructions on the field. Pant has also been in red-hot form with the bat. All eyes will also be on fast bowler Anrich Nortje.
For Mumbai Indians, the focus will be on their Indian core of players comprising Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah will be expected to shoulder more responsibilities this season for MI.
Jasprit Bumrah is among the best fast bowlers in the world and he’s expected to have another great IPL season. Bumrah has picked up 67 wickets over the last three seasons and has consistently bowled phenomenal spells for Mumbai Indians.
Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw and Anrich Nortje are capable of taking the game away from the opposition and could be in contention for the Man of the Match award. Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Jasprit Bumrah will be in the running from the Mumbai Indians camp.
Rishabh Pant has been in outstanding form for Delhi Capitals and he’d love to have a great personal IPL campaign this time around. It felt like the responsibilities of captaincy had been weighing him down last season but Pant 419 runs. However, for a batsman who is known for his pyrotechnics, his strike rate has been low over the last two seasons.
Suryakumar Yadav’s consistent performances in the Indian Premier League finally saw him being recognized in the international scene and he has become an important part of India’s white-ball side. Suryakumar has scored 1733 runs over the last four seasons and he has a strike rate of over 140 over the last two seasons.
