South Africa and Afghanistan will be up against each other in their final group fixture of the Cricket World Cup 2023. The match no. 42 of the tournament will take place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, November 10.
The two teams have only faced each other once in ODI cricket previously, which was in the 2019 World Cup. South Africa had hammered Afghanistan by nine wickets in that match. Afghanistan, who are still in the semifinals race, will be hoping to settle the score.
South Africa have had a strong World Cup campaign, occupying second spot on the table with 12 points and a net run-rate of 1.376. They have qualified for the semifinals and will be taking on Australia there.
The Proteas, however, need to get back to the winning ways after suffering a massive 243-run defeat against India. Chasing 327, South Africa batters were ambushed by India's bowling attack. Marco Jansen was the top run-scorer in their innings with 14 runs as they were shot out for just 83.
Aiden Markram to be South Africa's top batter. The middle order batter has been superb in this tournament. He has scored 371 runs from eight innings at an average of 53 while striking at 118. Markram has registered one century and three half centuries in this World Cup.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Kagiso Rabada to be South Africa's top bowler in this game. The right arm pacer has bowled pretty well in the tournament. He has taken 12 wickets from seven games at an economy of 4.97. His best figures in the competition read 3 for 33. Expect Rabada to pose a big threat to the Afghanistan batting unit.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Afghanistan have had an outstanding Cricket World Cup 2023 despite what happened in the previous game against Australia. They have won four games in the tournament and remain in the semifinals race with eight points and a net run-rate of -0.338.
In the previous game, Afghanistan were at the receiving end of arguably the greatest knock in the history of this sport. Ibrahim Zadran earlier scored an unbeaten 129 to help his side post 291 on the board. They were in firm control of the match, having reduced the Aussies to 91/7.
But then a combination of poor fielding, bowling and captaincy gave Glenn Maxwell a few reprieves and he made Afghanistan pay. Battling cramps, Maxwell smashed an unbeaten 201 off 128 to clinch the match from Afghanistan's jaw.
Ibrahim Zadran to be the top batter for Afghanistan. The opening batter became the first Afghanistan batter to record a century at the World Cup when he hit 129 not-out versus Australia. Zadran has scored 361 runs in the ongoing tournament, with one century and a half century.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Rashid Khan to be the top bowler for Afghanistan. The leg-break bowling superstar has bowled well in the tournament, picking nine wickets from eight games at an economy of just 4.58. Rashid's best figures in the competition were 3 for 37 against England.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Heinrich Klaasen to be the player of the match. The South African power-hitter is the best player of spin in the South African line-up and that will be crucial against Afghanistan. He has the ability to make a huge impact in a short period of time. Klaasen has smashed two centuries and a fifty in the competition.
The Proteas have been very dominant in recent times while batting first. But they have lost two games in the ongoing tournament while chasing. With the semifinals spot locked in, they could look to test themselves.
Afghanistan's last three victories have come while chasing and they could look to chase here. We predict Afghanistan to win the toss and bowl first.
Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad has hosted a total of 29 ODIs so far. The average first innings score at this venue stands at 243. The first innings scores in this tournament read 282, 191 and 286.
The pitches at this venue have generally been pretty good for batting. But the fast bowlers also get a good amount of movement, especially under lights. Expect a balanced surface for this game.
As per AccuWeather, the weather in Ahmedabad is expected to be hazy on Friday. There should be no cloud cover in the afternoon and evening, with no threat of rain as well. The temperature is likely to range between 26 to 35 degree Celsius.
Our prediction is that South Africa will win this match. The Proteas had hammered Afghanistan in their only clash which took place four years back.
Afghanistan are a much better side than those times, having won four games in this tournament. But South Africa will hold an edge due to their much stronger batting line-up and a pace attack that can trouble the Afghan batters.
