England will lock horns with Sri Lanka in the 25th match of ICC ODI World Cup 2023 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday.
The defending champions haven't been at their best in this tournament, as they have lost three out of their four games so far. In fact, their last defeat to South Africa was a massive one, which they lost by 229 runs. So, they have some serious introspection to do.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have also won only one out of their four games so far. But they are coming into this encounter on the back of a morale boosting win against the Netherlands in the previous game.
They will be eager to carry that momentum forward but a quality English side will make the task very difficult for the Lankans.
England have issues in both batting and bowling departments right now. The batters have failed in three out of the four games so far, which also includes a match against Afghanistan. Such a feared batting unit has surprisingly failed to step up to the occasion.
Moreover, the bowlers have delivered a very mediocre performance as well. Mark Wood, their premier pacer has leaked a lot of runs and there hasn't been much to talk about the other England bowlers either. But they need to rise to the occasion now if they want England to resurrect their campaign.
Dawid Malan scored a brilliant century against Bangladesh and now he is expected to deliver against Sri Lanka as well. Currently, Malan is Sri Lanka's highest run-scorer with 192 runs to his name at an average of 48.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Adil Rashid is expected to emerge as the best bowler for England in this contest. Rashid has picked up six wickets in this tournament so far, going at an economy rate of 5.18.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Sri Lanka registered their first win of the campaign in the last match when they defeated the Netherlands by five wickets, riding on Sadeera Samarawickrama unbeaten 91.
In fact, they have batted well in most matches but their bowling hasn't been able to support the batters at all. This is an area they need to address going ahead in the tournament as there is still time to stitch a few wins together and resurrect their campaign.
Sadeera Samarawickrama has been a very dependable batter in the middle-order for Sri Lanka. He is their highest run-scorer in the tournament at present, with 230 runs to his name at an average of 76.66.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Dilshan Madushanka could trouble the England batters a lot in this game. The left-arm pacer has picked up 11 wickets in this tournament so far, at an average of 21.18.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Dawid Malan has high chances of being adjudged the Player of the Match in this contest. He is an excellent player of spin and can handle the Sri Lankan pacers equally well. He hasn't done much since his century against Bangladesh, but he could regain his form in this contest.
This match will be played in Bengaluru, which means there are going to be plenty of runs on such a high scoring venue. So, fielding first and knowing the target isn't going to be a bad option here. Going by ODI data at this venue, teams batting first and second have won an equal number of matches at this venue.
The venue has very small ground dimensions, which makes hitting boundaries very easy here. There could be plenty of sixes hit in this match and the deck is also completely flat at this venue. It's a batting paradise in simple words, with an average score batting first being 264.
Absolutely bright and sunny weather has been forecasted for the match day, with temperature hovering around 31 degree Celsius. Humidity is expected to be around 47%.
While both teams have some serious talent in their ranks, England will start as the favourites to win as they have more firepower in their batting lineup and their bowling attack also has more pace than that of the Lankans.
