Australia and Pakistan will be up against each other in the World Cup 2023 match on Friday, October 20 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
Australia have won six out of 10 World Cup matches against Pakistan. The last time when they met in the mega event, the Aussies beat Pakistan by 41 runs at The Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton.
Australia started their campaign with two heavy defeats at the hands of India and South Africa. The defeats were bad to the extent that they slumped to the bottom of the points table. However, they made amends after beating Sri Lanka by five wickets. But the Aussies will be looking for a clinical showing after Sri Lanka made them sweat for runs and wickets.
Glenn Maxwell loves playing against Pakistan. Among the current set of players from both teams, Maxwell is the leading run-scorer, having notched 735 runs from 16 innings at an average of 52.50 and a strike-rate of 125.42 with seven half-centuries to his name. Maxwell is yet to be at his very best in the World Cup and will look for a knock of substance against his favorite opponent.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Mitchell Starc has been among the prolific bowlers in the history of World Cups. He has an excellent record against Pakistan in ODIs. The left-arm seamer has taken 23 wickets from 10 matches at an economy rate of 4.56. The left-arm pacer has taken five wickets in three matches in the ongoing World Cup, although he is yet to strike his best.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Pakistan started their World Cup campaign after beating the Netherlands. Thereafter, Mohammad Rizwan’s heroics helped them record the highest successful run-chase in the history of World Cups in the match against Sri Lanka.
However, the seven-wicket defeat against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad pushed Babar Azam’s men. With their backs to the walls, it remains to be seen if the Men in Green can recover from their defeat against India and put in a strong showing against the five-time world champions.
Babar Azam has struggled in World Cup 2023, although he scored a fifty against India in Ahmedabad. But one should not raise eyebrows if he goes big in the next match. In nine ODIs against Australia, Babar has scored 588 runs at an average of 73.50 and a strike-rate of 91.73 with three hundreds and two fifties to his name. He got his top score of 114 back on March 31, 2022 in Lahore.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
The selection might raise eyebrows, but numbers favor Hasan Ali as far as determining who might be Pakistan’s standout bowler in the upcoming match. The pacer is currently Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in World Cup 2023, having churned out seven wickets from three matches. Against Australia, Hasan has taken 13 wickets from seven wickets at an economy rate of 6.84.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Going by numbers, one can bet on Babar Azam to win the Player of the Match award at the high-scoring venue in Bangalore. The fifty he got against India would have given him some confidence after he faltered against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.
If teams win the toss, they should opt to field first. Targets of even above the 300-run mark may not be safe. Bangalore is a six-hitting venue and teams have also piled on runs in the IPL apart from international cricket.
The venue in Bangalore has hosted 24 completed ODIs thus far. Australia have won only four out of 10 ODIs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The last time Pakistan played in Bangalore, they beat Ajay Jadeja’s India by 123 runs.
The pitch in Bangalore is expected to be a belter for the batters and bowlers need to be on their toes to reap the rewards. The average score at the venue is 276, which suggests that a high-scoring match is on the cards.
Pakistan lost their previous game to India, but one cannot undermine the firepower that they have. Australia, on the other hand, will be hungry for more wins, especially after how they started their campaign in the World Cup. Given all the factors, one can expect the team batting second to win the match.
