KXIP is a team that has not been able to perform up to its calibre until now. Throughout the different seasons of the IPL, the KXIP squad has only participated in 2 playoffs. In all the other seasons, KXIP has never once been among the top 4 teams on the points table. KXIP has played for the Champions League trophy twice but has never made it to the top. The team’s performance in the 2019 IPL season was mediocre at best.
RR’s track-record is somewhat similar to that of KXIP. However, RR’s expulsion from the IPL in 2015 significantly tarnished the team’s name. The 2015 verdict of the Supreme Court suspended Rajasthan Royals from participating in the tournament for the next two years. This decision came in light of the 2013 betting scandal involving RR and CSK.
The team remained inactive during the 2016 and 2017 season of the IPL. Regardless, RR started its IPL career by emerging victorious in the inaugural season of the tournament. However, the team’s journey in the IPL ever since has been a bumpy ride. RR’s return to the Indian Premier League is 2018 didn’t end up with the team lifting the cup either. However, Rajasthan Royals finished the season with a respect-worthy fourth position on the points table. The team failed to carry the same momentum to 2019’s rendition of the IPL. RCB was the only team that fared worse than RR in 2019. In other words, RR held the 7th position on the 2019 points table.
Rajasthan Royals has been one of the most followed teams of the IPL. Shooting to fame because of its instant victory in 2008. Being the first-ever team to lift the IPL trophy surely made them shine in every Indian’s eye. Amidst upheavals and scandals like team ban and change of skipper in the middle of the season, Rajasthan Royals has always managed to be in the limelight. The team is also known for promoting new talent and buying players who have never been on the big screen before. Winning the trophy once, RR has reached the playoffs only three times since then.
With Rajasthan Royals keeping 80% of their team and Kings XI Punjab again revamping almost their entire team including the leadership, both the teams look strong to go against each other. When faced with each other, the matches will be full of fun, entertainment, sitting-on-the-edge excitement and a lot of surprises. With KL Rahul leading the Kings, they will have lots of new ideas, maturity, and calmness in the team. All we have to do now is to wait for IPL 2020 to begin and experience all the fun it promises.
A team even weaker than RR is Kings XI Punjab. KXIP also has been one of the original 8 IPL teams formed in 2008. However, KXIP is one of those teams who have never been able to reach the top even after 12 seasons. They have been in the playoffs only twice till now. In addition, they don’t even seem to be getting close. With changing captains and coaches every season, the team has never been able to build a sturdy team like other IPL teams. Let us see how the Kings have fared against the Royals during these years.
While the Kings XI Punjab has been doing everything, they can to improve as a team, this upcoming season the fans of Rajasthan Royals will be looking forward to the game between the teams more than the fans of Kings XI Punjab. After their lost battle in 2018, KXIP got a great opportunity next year at the same place to take good revenge. In fact, in 2019, the Kings XI Punjab recorded their first-ever win at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium when they beat the Rajasthan Royals team by 14 runs. After receiving a target of 185 runs, the Royals were headed in the right direction until the KXIP bowler and skipper Ravichandran Ashwin saw Jos Butler head a little too far off the non-striker’s end and ran him out even before starting to bowl. This run-out came as a major blow for the Royals and ended up losing eight wickets when they just had 77 more runs to make.
KXIP battled against RR in its home ground at PCA Stadium, Mohali on 16 April 2019. The end-result of the match was thoroughly disappointing for RR. However, the home team exhibited exemplary sportsmanship and snatched a victory that was completely deserved. After KXIP finished the first innings with a total of 184 runs, RR geared up for the chase. Rahul Tripathi was the only batsman from RR who didn’t fail at the hands of KXIP’s bowlers. He scored 50 runs in 45 balls and went back to the pavilion after playing for 74 mins. Ravichandran Ashwin retired two key batsmen from RR (including Rahul Tripathi). His performance in this match also won him the player of the match title. At the batting end, KXIP players showed a united front. Lokesh Rahul, Chris Gayle, Mayank Aggarwal, and David Miller gave steady performances.
The 2018 home-ground clash between KXIP and RR was not hosted at the PCA stadium. Instead, both the teams competed at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. The end-result of the match was in favor of the home team. The target of 153 runs put together by RR in the 1st innings was not a difficult score to beat. It took KXIP a little short of 19 overs to sum up the match. Chris Gayle did not bat as well as expected. However, Kannur Lokesh Rahul exhibited magnificent batsmanship and contributed 84 runs to the chase. Even at the bowling end, KXIP’s performance was nothing short of commendable. Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s agile attack took 3 RR players down. He received the player of the match title for the same.
When the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab met at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on May 08, 2018, the match served an opportunity for RR to come up from the floor of the table to the middle. The Rajasthan Royals defeated Kings XI Punjab by 15 runs after winning the toss for the day. Posing a target of 159 runs, RR bowled their innings very well and restricted the opposition at mere 143 runs even though KL Rahul waged a lone battle and scored 95 runs unbeaten. But sadly even that did not help KXIP win the match.
