Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will lock horns in the first of three-match ODI series starting from February 9. The match is scheduled to take place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and will commence at 2:30 PM IST. After winning the one-off Test comfortably, Sri Lanka will be keen on performing well in the ODI series as well.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan will feel confident of coming up on top in the 50-over format having defeated Sri Lanka multiple times. Moreover, they dominating victory in the World Cup few months will also keep them in good stead. Overall, a pretty competitive and a close fight is expected from both teams in the series opener.
Who will win today’s match? We will answer this question in this article next:
Sri Lanka will be looking forward to doing well in this series after a poor show in the World Cup. A win in the one-off Test must have given them a lot of confidence and under new skipper Kusal Mendis, the hosts would be keen on avenging the loss at the mega event last year in India. Sri Lanka will also be wary of Afghanistan’s decent record against them and not take them lightly.
Kusal Mendis has been named the full-time captain of Sri Lanka in the ODI format now and the talented batter will be keen to lead from the front. He will mostly bat at three and look to anchor the innings as well.
He has played 124 ODIs so far scoring 3638 runs and is one of the best batters for Sri Lanka in the line-up. A lot will depend on how he fares with the bat if the hosts are to win the opener.

Wanindu Hasaranga is the best Sri Lanka bowler and certainly, he will have to click for the home side to win this ODI.
He was missed badly in the World Cup but the leg-spinner is now fit and has already done wonders on his comeback. Hasaranga has picked 74 wickets in 49 ODIs and he will be gunning to add more to his tally.

Afghanistan’s tour of Sri Lanka didn’t start on a good note but they will be quietly feeling confident when it comes to the ODI series.
They have beaten Sri Lanka four times in the format and have dominated them too at times. The World Cup win will also make them feel better and expect the visitors to come hard at the hosts in the opener.
Ibrahim Zadran loves to face Sri Lanka. His career best score of 162 has come against the same team while he also smacked a brilliant ton in the one-off Test earlier on the tour. Zadran is the best batter for Afghanistan currently and if he bats the way he normally does against the hosts, the visitors are certain to take an early lead in the series.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Fazalhaq Farooqi’s emergence over the last few months in the format has been really good for Afghanistan. He did well in the World Cup game against Sri Lanka too picking up wickets at the perfect time for his side.
His left-arm swing bowling with the new ball will be key and early wickets will be need of the hour in this game.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
The aforementioned cricket betting tips will help you in determining the player of the match award winner in the series opener. Ibrahim Zadran and Kusal Mendis are the two players who can make a match-winning impact in this encounter.
Our toss prediction for the first ODI between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan is that the team winning the toss will bowl first. The reason being that the last three matches played here have been won by chasing teams.
Pallekele is set to host the first ODI and expect this to be a very good surface on offer. There will be some turn especially under the sun but the ball should come on the bat better under the lights. The cricket odds will be in balance to start with even as the weather is set to be clear with no chance of rain.
Afghanistan are expected to win this match and take an early lead in the series. However, if Sri Lanka play to their full potential, they can seriously make things interesting.
