The 53rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be played between Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings on Sunday (May 5). The clash will be played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala and will commence at 3:30 PM IST.
It is a quick turnaround for the two teams as they faced each other on May 1 at Chepauk with Punjab winning comfortably in the previous face-off.
They continue to be in the must-win situation and would need to not only beat CSK but also remaining teams in upcoming matches.
Meanwhile, the defending champions also find themselves in a spot of bother with five wins and losses each in 10 matches and will have to win this match to avoid entering the must-win zone.
Today’s match prediction is what follows in this article with analysis of both teams in action:
Punjab Kings have now won two matches in a row and seem to be gathering confidence at the perfect stage in the tournament. But they cannot relax as CSK will look to hit back after a crushing loss at home.
Rilee Rossouw and Jonny Bairstow have been their in-form batters but their bowlers too are doing well with Kagiso Rabada and Harpreet Brar leading the way in pace and spin department respectively.
Jonny Bairstow is certain to score runs having regained his form in time for Punjab Kings. He backed up his unbeaten 108 with a 46-run knock against CSK and the Kings would need Bairstow to continue in the same vein.
Opening the innings, the English batter will be expected to go big again to add to his 250 runs in IPL 2024 at a strike rate of 165.56.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Rahul Chahar loves bowling against CSK. He returned with figures of 2/16 in the last game and he himself reminded the commentators in the break after the first innings that he had done well earlier against CSK a few years ago too.
Chahar hasn’t been consistent this season playing only five matches for his five wickets but this is another opportunity for the leggie to prove his mettle.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Chennai Super Kings seem to be losing steam as the season is progressing. They don’t have Mustafizur Rahman from now on while Matheesha Pathirana didn’t play last game due to a niggle.
Tushar Deshpande is expected to recover for this game while Deepak Chahar’s hamstring injury too seemed serious as he walked off. They are too light on the bowling front and will need the batters to take the onus and score those extra 20 runs in every match from now on to stay in the hunt for the playoffs.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is the orange cap holder of IPL 2024 at the moment and he will have to score runs at any cost for CSK.
He has so far scored 509 runs at an average of 63.62 and a strike-rate of almost 147 with four fifties and a century to his name. The captain should continue to lead from the front if CSK are to break a five-match losing streak against PBKS in IPL.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Richard Gleeson made his IPL debut in the last game and didn’t look perturbed with the occasion. The man troubled the batters with his pace and made the new ball swing as well.
With favourable conditions expected in Dharamsala, Gleeson can play a key role for CSK especially if Pathirana doesn’t get fit in time. Gleeson finished with the figures of 1/30 in 3.5 overs and would be keen on doing well in this game too.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
The aforementioned cricket betting tips will assist you in making informed decisions when it comes to picking the player of the match award winner.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has to be the man lifting it after the match in Dharamsala. He is in good form having amassed 509 runs so far and should play another match-winning knock for his side.
Our toss prediction for this match between PBKS and CSK is that the team winning the toss will bowl first. Conditions are unknown for both sides and the teams, for the same reason, would play safe and opt to bowl.
This is the first HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala is hosting a match in IPL 2024. It is a scenic venue and the surface is expected to be fresh and good for batting too. However, the new will do its bit for the first few overs in both innings exciting the opening bowlers.
The cricket betting odds will be in balance to start with while the weather is expected to be clear during the match and the temperature to be in the mid-20s.
Chennai Super Kings should be able to end their five-match losing streak against Punjab Kings in IPL. Consistency has been a problem with PBKS over the years and that might play a role in this game. Moreover, CSK isn’t a team that will let their strong position go away for long with a playoff spot at stake.
