Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has been playing IPL for the last 11 years. However, the team did not win the IPL trophy even once. The team has been able to create several stunning records over the years. The team has also registered the record of scoring the highest number of runs in a single inning. RCB set a target of 263 runs for 5 wickets against Pune Warriors in the year 2013.
Explosive Chris Gayle emerged as the leading run-scorer in the IPL in that season. He hit 175 runs in that match. RCB recorded its most successful performances in the years 2009, 2011, and 2016, where it became the finalist.
The other team that has such power of some huge star players is RCB. RCB always gathered huge fan base withholding Chris Gayle, A B Devilliers, and Virat Kohli in their set. Regardless of its fluctuating performances in various versions of IPL, their potential is unquestionably admirable. It is also a team with the potential to bring big flip-flops in key-matches. That gives us good reasons to expect much from an MI Vs RCB rivalry. Let’s ponder over their ifs and buts and some recent clashes.
Both MI and RCB have a great reputation along with players with even a greater reputation. MI has claimed the title 4 times and has proved its power during the courses of earlier seasons. RCB has remained a desperate yet powerful contender that has much to gain. All that makes this rivalry always is a must-watch.
The Mumbai Indians has always been a great contender and a tough rival in all the IPL seasons it has played. It has been the most facilitated and refined team of IPL with Reliance Industries and legendary veterans like Sachin Tendulkar at its back. While MI has the highest brand value, it is also the most successful team in IPL history.
To its glory, it has bagged 4 IPL titles since its inception in 2008. Right from the beginning of IPL, every season incessantly the fans expected MI to claim the ultimate victory. Wankhede Stadium is the home ground of MI where every match against MI becomes clash with titans.

MI start as favourite for the 10th IPL Match – perhaps unsurprisingly given RCB’s very poor head to head record of 9 wins from 27 matches. The 2020 starting games for MI are very encouraging. Although losing to CSK, it took a very special innings from Rayudu for CSK to win and with Bumrah having an off day its easy to see a different result once MI and CSK play again. The Mumbai Indians squad looks very well balanced with Trent Boult and Pattinson. And, although Bumrah has looked “off”, he will perform and show why he was the number one ranked T20 bowler. Mumbai is one of the favourites to win the IPL league this year both looking very dangerous. Kolkata batsmen looked uncomfortable against these two quick bowlers.
On the batting side, MI possess an incredible lineup. Quinton de Kock (average 33 & strike rate 138), Rohit Sharma (average 32 & strike rate 133) and Suryakumar Yadav (average 31 & strike rate 139) can form a great platform for MI to score big.
RCB, lead by Sir Virat Kohli, is also a powerful side. But that is said year in, year out and RCB ALWAYS fail to perform up to expectation. With two completed matches, RCB is carrying the same sketchy form their fans know too well – at least they are consistent! In the 6th IPL match against KXIP they were absolutely battered losing by 97 runs. It’s a performance best forgotten as the bowlers were comprehensively destroyed by King’s captain KL Rahul (132* off 69). Incidentally, this is the biggest score by an Indian captain in IPL history.
In their opening game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, RCB squeezed in a very hard-fought win. SRH were in a strong position at 2/121 only to lose the next 8 wickets for 32 runs and lose the match. Chahal, Dube and Saini bowled very well picking up 7 wickets between them but equally important bowling very economically. The millionaire dollar question is, could they do it again?
We will provide our RCB vs MI match prediction as soon as there is more clarity on the teams. For now check out the odds for the match in the table above. Bodog is offering the best odds of 1.77 (at time of writing) for a Mumbai Indians win, and 10cric offering 2.10 for an RCB win.
In most cases, RCB had always been a great contender yet had not yet made it possible to win the cup. This has a great effect to matter in RCB matches ahead. This team with great potential but lack of success may be very well-set for gabbing the victory. But it would also be haunted of its earlier bad lucks. For MI, on the other hand, times had been good in IPL in the past. But MI too took a slow start in most IPLs. It found it hard to qualify the preliminary rounds in earlier seasons.
For those two mighty teams, the reputation and the desperation stay at the front. Both are magnum teams on paper. Both are filled with excellent players. It’s going to be always a great watch to see RCB taking on MI.
Games played: 27
Royal Challengers Bangalore wins: 9

RCB have only won 9 of 27 T20 matches.
MI love playing RCB.
RCB and MI have played 27 matches so far out of which RCB won 9 and MI won 18. The clashes between RCB and MI produced some amazing moments over the year. The amazing encounters between the two rivals leave their fans in complete joy. In the first match in 2008, RCB defeated MI by wickets.
Recently Virat Kohli has claimed the record of being the second batsman, after Suresh Raina, in IPL history to have scored 5000 runs. He is also the Indian test cricket team captain and carries a lot of weight on his shoulders. During IPL 2019, though RCB had not performed up to the expectation. But Virat himself had claimed 464 runs with a huge century. Then he has another legendary player A B Devilliers in his team. Virat would be willing to have good support from the fellow members and a great run forward would be waiting for RCB. Mumbai had taken on Chennai in 2019 and defeated them twice l. It has set them on a powerful yet vulnerable position of the sitting victors. Its key players too got the rewards. While MI is the most-watched team by IPL viewership, RCB has its loyal fan base that travels along with its famous R-C-B chants. They call RCB as ‘Sea of Red’. There are also two captains from two sides which are respectively captain and vice-captain of India: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both are also key-players and leading run makers in their teams in most cases. We must adorn this interesting rivalry with this distinct clash.

In the match, AB de Villiers had a lucky escape as well when he was dropped at 0.
The match had a controversial moment as well. The umpire missed the no-ball in the crucial last over. Had the umpire noted it, the result would have been different. Virat Kohli expressed his disappointment and said that we are playing IPL level games not club cricket. The umpire should have their eyes open during such crucial junctures in the match. MI managed to clinch a big thriller leaving their fans in joy. The leading scorer from MI remained Rohit Sharma (48) and Suryakumar Yadav (38).

Moeen Ali of RCB scalped the wickets of both the openers and brought RCB back in the match. RCB’s spinners did a good job and somehow for a while restricted MI on a pitch that had bounce and turns. But, it was Mumbai Indians’ days as they continued to find their sixes and boundaries. It helped them keep the required rate under control. Finally, MI claimed victory by 5 wickets.
In 2019, RCB had to lose both its match against MI. The 31st match of the series was played at Wankhede. It was a decisive match and seemed like RCB isn’t in its touch. MI rapidly made 70 runs in 7 overs. It was looking unstoppable.

Barring Hardik Pandya, who scored a half-century in 42 balls, the remaining players of MI failed to put up a good show. When MI began chasing the target set by RCB, it lost its top order in the first seven overs. However, Mumbai Indians managed to restrict Royal Challengers Bangalore at 167 for the loss of 7 wickets. But, the team could not maintain the momentum and lost the match by 14 runs. Meanwhile, in the first match, MI made 213 runs for RCB to chase. Chasing the mammoth total, the RCB batting order collapsed and made 167 for 8 wickets thus losing the match to MI. Virat Kohli made 92 runs off 62 balls while MI’s batsman Rohit Sharma 94 runs off 52 balls.
RCB and MI clashed for the first time in IPL 2018 at MI home ground Wankhede Stadium. Rohita Sharma (94 of 52) and Lewis (65 of 42) set to a great foundation that led MI to a tough score of 213 runs. RCB had to chase it against a skilled pace battery. At that point, other than Kohli (92 of 62) no other batsman could hold the pitch. RCB gifted MI an easy win. To alter the course, however, the 46th match brought a blowing spell by Hardik Pandya and RCB brought MI down on 153/7 against 167 RCB. Pandya claimed 3 wickets.
