The team for Gujrat Titans is yet to be finalized. The IPL 2022 auctions are being termed as Mega Auctions for most of the IPL players are in the pool now to be picked up by various franchises. All the existing and new franchises were allowed to retain (or pick in case of the new franchise) a maximum of 4 players before the 2022 Mega Auctions. The new franchises, however, are allowed a maximum of 3 picks with a maximum of one overseas player.
While the existing franchises have announced their retentions already by the end of November 2021, a franchise like Gujrat Titans was supposed to pick players from the pool before 25th December 2021.
However, the delay from BCCI to formally accept CVC Capitals as the owners of the Ahmedabad based franchise has led to the deadline being pushed to a further date. However, now CVC Capital Partners have received a go-ahead from BCCI. So we can expect the franchise to declare their picks before the auctions.
However, the matter is settled in the favour of CVCCapitals. The franchise will start with a purse of INR 90 Crore (about USD 12 million) which is the max a team can spend on the players.
Gujrat Titans have already appointed former South African batter Gary Kirsten as their mentor and former Indian bowler Ashish Nehra as the head coach. Gary had been instrumental in India’s triumph in the 2011 World Cup. Both of them have been with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) before and bring a wealth of experience on and off the field. Former England batsman, Vikram Solanki, is set to perform the role of the team director.
Gujrat Titans had a lot of options to start building their team from scratch with marquee players like Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Suresh Raina, David Warner, to name a few, available in the pool for selection. Suresh Raina was also a good option given that he has already led another now-defunct franchise from Gujrat – Gujrat Lions – in the past.
Gujrat Titans have chosen their 3 picks before the auctions. The franchise has chosen the ex-Mumbai Indians player Hardik Pandya to lead the team in their inaugural season. He is also set to be the first all-rounder captain in the IPL.
They have also roped in an Afghan player and one of the world’s best T20 players – Rashid Khan. He played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last season. Shubman Gill – the young Indian batting sensation and former KKR opener is their third pick.
Both Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan will be given INR 15 Crore each while Shubman Gill will be given INR 7 Crore. This has been a great financial leap for Hardik Pandya who was first bought in 2015 auctions for a mere INR 10 Lakh. Hardik Pandya also brings the experience of being a part of the title-winning side four times – IPL 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Hardik Pandya and the franchise would hope that he remains injury-free through the season and take Gujrat Titans to glory.
Rashid Khan has established himself as one the best T20 spinners. He was first bought for INR 4 Crore by SRH in 2017 and 5 years later he was picked for INR 15 crore by the Ahmedabad franchise. This will be the second team for Gill after playing for KKR in the earlier season. He too jumped from INR 1.8 Crore to 7 Crore within a span of 4 seasons.
After spending INR 37 Crore on the three picks the Ahmedabad franchise will go into the mega-auctions with a purse of INR 53 Crore.
Gujrat Titans went to CVC Capital Partners for a whopping bid of INR 5625 Crore (USD 750 million approximately) outbidding Adani Group by a short margining whose bid was INR 5100 Crore.
The Ahmedabad based franchise went for close to 3 times the base price for the new franchise which was set to INR 2000 Crore by BCCI.
The CVC Capitals Partners, who are new to the IPL, bring a lot of experience from other sports such as Formula-1, Rugby and Spanish Football League.
BCCI looked into the company’s details before appointing them as the formal owner of the team. They specifically looking into CVC Capital Partners’ ties with two betting companies and is taking counsel from various experts including the High Court judge before formally sealing the deal.
Now that the matter is settled, CVC Capital partners would be looking forward to beginning their IPL journey.
The cricket fans from Gujrat must be thrilled that franchise from Ahmedabad, the biggest city in Gujrat, will get to host the home matches at the biggest cricket stadium in the World.
CVC Capital Partners paid an enormous amount of INR 5625 Crore (USD 750 million approximately) for the Ahmedabad franchise.
Ashish Nehra will be the head coach and South African Gary Kirsten will work as a mentor for Ahmedabad.
