Adelaide Strikers

Adelaide Strikers

Adelaide Strikers are a professional T20 cricket franchise based out of Adelaide, Australia. They are a part of the Big Bash League (BBL), the official T20 cricket league in Australia, since its inception in season 2011-12.

Adelaide Strikers have had mixed success in BBL so far in the first 10 seasons. They have won the championship once beating Hobart Hurricanes in the finals of season 2017-2018 which was the seventh season of BBL as known as BBL|07. In the last season, they lost in the eliminator against Brisbane Heat.

In the 105 games played so far, Adelaide Strikers have won 54 matches and lost 48 matches while 3 matches resulted in no result. Their winning percentage of 52.94% is 3rd-highest among 8 franchises.

Their recent history is on similar lines as that of the overall record with 5 wins in the last 10 games.

The Strikers would want to get to winning ways right away in BBL|11. The Australian international Travis Head captains the team whereas the former Australian international cricketer, and a lethal fast bowler, Jason Gillespie is their head coach.

The famous Adelaide Oval is Strikers’ home ground which has a sitting capacity of over 50,000. They are the only franchise apart from Perth Scorchers who have a single home venue.

Adelaide Strikers Fixtures

Adelaide Strikers will start BBL 11 with back-to-back matches – away and home in that order – against Melbourne Renegades. The Strikers have the highest winning percentage (64.29%) against Melbourne Renegades with 9 wins in 14 games.

The strikers would feel confident to start their tournament against a team they have the best record against. They would love to continue the good record against the Renegades.

Adelaide Strikers have played 16 matches each against Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunders winning 9 against Hurricanes with 6 losses whereas they have won and lost 7 matches each against Sydney Thunders with a couple of washouts.

Sydney Sixers is the only team against whom the Strikers have lost more matches than they have won. In the 14 matches played so far against the Sixers, the Strikers have lost 9 and won just 5 games. They have played 14 matches against Brisbane Heat as well, winning 8 and losing 6 of these.

The strikers have played the least against Melbourne Stars. In the 13 head-to-head games, the Strikers have won 7 and lost 6 matches against the Stars.

Overall, the Adelaide Strikers have won more matches than they have lost against all the teams except for the Sixers. They would want to better that in this BBL|11 while continuing the dominance over other teams.

Adelaide Strikers Team

In the first three seasons, the Adelaide Strikers team failed to reach the knock-out phase. Then, in the two consecutive seasons in 2014-15 and 2015-16, they managed to bounce back strongly to top the group after the league stage. However, the Strikers ended both these seasons with a loss in the first semi-final.

Season 2016-17 proved to be yet another lacklustre one when they failed to reach the knock-out stage. Despite that the Strikers were rated the most entertaining team that season.

Adelaide Strikers played their best so far in season 2017-18 where they went all the way to clinch the trophy – their only championship in this competition so far.

The Strikers could not reach knock-outs in the 8th season in 2018-19. In the last season, they did manage to get into the playoffs but lost to Sydney Thunder in the knockout match.

In BBL|10, they once again qualified for the playoffs but could not go past Sydney Thunder the second time in a row and got eliminated in the Eliminator.

The New Year Clash – abbreviated as the NYE Clash – has become part of the BBL tradition where Adelaide Strikers host a home match on 31st December. Till the 8th edition, the Strikers maintained a 6-0 record in NYE clash. Though last year, in BBL|09, they lost to Sydney Thunders by 3 runs.

The Striker’s team for this season looks pretty balanced. They are captained by international player Travis Head at the top of the batting along with Jake Weatherald and Alex Carey which makes Adelaide Strikers a formidable batting unit.

The presence of Rashid Khan makes it one of the better bowling attacks. The strikers have added all-rounder Liam Scott, batter Ryan Gibson, and bowlers George Garton and Fawad Ahmed – who has been given a lifeline by the strikers when many thought Fawad played his last BBLgame in BBL|10.

Adelaide Strikers WBBL

Adelaide Strikers Women, a women’s BBL franchise from North Adelaide in South Australia, have been part of all the WBBL seasons so far. They reached the finals of WBBL|5 in season 2019/20 where they were defeated by Brisbane Heat Women who went on to win their second consecutive title thanks to the formidable Beth Mooney who scored an unbeaten half-century in the finals.

Adelaide Strikers Women’s star player Sophie Devine was the player of the tournament in that season. Their search for the maiden title continues in the WBBL|7.
