Match Commentary
Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) fly north from Chennai and Mumbai respectively for their Delhi leg of matches. Both teams finished their respective first legs on similar points – four (two wins, three losses).
It could’ve been a lot worse for MI had it not been for those two heists with the ball, defending 152 and 150 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) respectively. The bowlers got the defending champions out of a muddle and pulled off wins in those two matches from positions where the opposition were cruising.
MI’s batting hasn’t really stepped up and made a mark. Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav have been the only ones that have fired. The platform has been set more often than not but the likes of Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard and the Pandya brothers have just not got going. The sluggish Chepauk track didn’t help and the track at the Arun Jaitley Stadium won’t help either. Thus, it’s high-time that the famed and power-packed middle-order comes to the party.
Meanwhile, RR’s form has fluctuated. The two times they restricted oppositions to sub-150 totals, the batting chased it down and ended up winning the game. However, they failed to defend 177 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Targets of 222 and 189 couldn’t be chased down.
The middle-order has started to give RR some hope. Sanju Samson did well in the last game, steering RR through a solid run-chase while Shivam Dube has looked good in the last couple of games. David Miller and Riyan Parag seem to be batting well too. Jos Buttler’s form continues to remain a worry. The bowling has been inconsistent and expensive more often than not.
Moreover, RR are one team that has had the wood over MI in the last few years. The overall head to head may be neck and neck at 12-12. However, since the start of 2018, RR have won five games while MI have won just one.

Team News
Team news: Mumbai Indians
Rohit Sharma has been struggling with his hamstring but it’s not a big concern. Hardik Pandya’s shoulder issue is still be monitored and it is not yet clear when can he return to bowling. However, all players are fit and available for selection. MI may look to bring back their fourth overseas player and Nathan Coulter-Nile could play his first game of this season.
Team news: Rajasthan Royals
RR are left with just four overseas players in their squad. While Ben Stokes fractured his finger and was ruled out, Jofra Archer did not arrive due to a hand injury and has now been ruled out of the entire tournament. Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone flew back home due to bio-bubble fatigue. Andrew Tye was the latest to leave the RR camp and he cited personal reasons and the worsening COVID-19 situation in India as he flew back to Australia.
Predicted XI
Mumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Hardik Pandya, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Krunal Pandya, 7 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 8 Jayant Yadav, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Trent Boult
Rajasthan Royals: 1 Jos Buttler, 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Sanju Samson (capt & wk), 4 Shivam Dube, 5 David Miller, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 Riyan Parag, 8 Chris Morris, 9 Jaydev Unadkat, 10 Chetan Sakariya, 11 Mustafizur Rahman
Key players
Kieron Pollard: Kieron Pollard hasn’t really fired so far in this IPL 2021. The hard-hitting Trinidad & Tobago all-rounder has mustered 65 runs in five innings and is striking at just 116.07. His 35 not out against SRH proved to be vital which helped MI get to 150. Apart from that, there hasn’t been any big contribution or any performance of note. In fact, Pollard’s struggles and poor form has impact MI’s form as well. The middle-order hasn’t fired and that has been an area of concern for the defending champions. Thus, it is imperative for MI that Pollard gets back to his six-hitting best. He is critical in that middle-order.
Jos Buttler: Jos Buttler has looked a touch off in this tournament. All he has managed is 89 runs in five innings while striking at 127.14. He has registered three single-digit scores and only 30+ score. RR’s fortunes are heavily dependant on Buttler’s form. Yes, they have won a couple of games without a major contribution from the England wicket-keeper batsman. However, in the long run, Buttler’s form will be crucial for RR.
