Match Prediction – KKR vs MI, 5th Match IPL 2021 – Who Will Win Today’s Match?

In match number five of this 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League, Kolkata Knight Riders will be up against Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai (KKR to MI head to head) The two teams had contrasting starts to their 2021 campaign.

It was a pretty good all-round performance from Eoin Morgan and co. Their top-order batting was a concern ahead of the tournament and the two-time champions didn’t get regular starts at the top but in this game, they put all those concerns to bed.

Shubman Gill may not have kicked on and converted his small start but Nitish Rana and Rahul Tripathi went out on the attack to lay the foundation for the score of 187. Moreover, the bowling was slightly inconsistent at times but overall, it was good and almost all bowlers chipped in well.

Thus, KKR have had a good start and that too, it has come without any significant contribution from Andre Russel or their fiery middle-order which also comprises of Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik. The latter did chip in with a useful cameo but it was largely the Indian players who stepped up. Thus, the KKR team management will be pleased with that.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians (MI) didn’t have the best of starts. For the ninth season in a row, they lost their first game of the season. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) came back strongly after MI got a solid start with the bat and the Rohit Sharma-led side could put up just 159 /9 batting first which was just about par.

The MI bowlers did give a star-studded RCB batting line-up a run for their money and almost pulled the game out as well but the three-time finalists held their nerve to go past the finish line.

However, the loss in the opening encounter against RCB shouldn’t really worry the defending champions. They are a quality side and seem to have all bases covered. In fact, all five title wins for the Rohit Sharma-led side have started with a loss. Their batting line-up looks solid while the bowling has enough depth to trouble any side.

Moreover, MI have an overwhelming head to head record against KKR. MI have won a whopping 21 games out of the 27 that these two sides have squared off. Moreover, in the last 12 games between MI and KKR, the former have won 11 times.

Team News

Team news: Kolkata Knight Riders

There are no injury concerns in the KKR camp and hence, they will unlikely change a winning combination.

Team news: Mumbai Indians

Quinton de Kock is going to be out of quarantine and he will likely be available for this game. The South African wicket-keeper batsman will most probably come in as a straight swap for Chris Lynn at the top of the order. The rest of the squad is likely to be the same.

Predicted XI

Kolkata Knight Riders: Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan (c), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Andre Russell, Shakib Al Hasan, Pat Cummins, Harbhajan Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy

Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Marco Jansen, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah

Key players

Andre Russell: Andre Russell had a sedate start to the 2021 season. He scored just five and returned with figures of 1/32 in three overs. He wasn’t in the best of forms in the 2020 edition either. However, the hard-hitting West Indian all-rounder is a match-winner and can change any game in no time.

With Chennai producing slowish tracks, Russell’s power-hitting in the middle will be crucial for KKR. His bowling will continue to be vital as well.

Jasprit Bumrah: It was Jasprit Bumrah’s first competitive game in more than 40 days and his first T20 game since the IPL 2020 final in November but he looked in excellent form.

The ace Indian and Mumbai Indians fast bowler produced a stellar performance as he returned with figures of 2/26 from his four overs which included the big scalps of Virat Kohli and Daniel Christian. He was the one who brought MI back in the game. Every time MI have been in trouble, Rohit Sharma has invariably turned to Bumrah for a breakthrough and the 27-year-old stepped up almost every time. Hence, Bumrah will be the key once again.
