In the second match of the Big Bash League (BBL), Sydney Thunder take on the Brisbane Heat. These are two side who’ve more often than not been in the bottom half of in most seasons of the BBL. Sydney Thunder have the worst win percentage in the history of the BBL (39.7%). Meanwhile, Brisbane Heat have the third-lowest win percentage (45.67%). However, last season, both these teams finished in the top five and bowed out in the knockouts. They will be looking to carry on from that and go a few steps further this time around.
As far as head to head record is concerned, Brisbane Heat are well ahead. They have won 10 games while Sydney Thunder have won just three. Among those three, two have come in the last two seasons.
Wins: Sydney Thunder 3, Brisbane Heat 10
Last 5 matches: Sydney Thunder 2, Brisbane Heat 3
Both teams stack up well but Sydney Thunder have succumbed against Brisbane Heat in majority of the games. Thus, given their superior head to head record of 10-3, Brisbane Heat will start as favourites.
Sydney Thunder will be without their regular skipper Usman Khawaja who is with the Australian Test side. Chris Green will lead the side. The England duo of Alex Hales and Sam Billings are the international signings. Meanwhile, Brisbane Heat will be led by Jimmy Pierson. Ben Duckett is all set to make his BBL debut while Mujeeb Ur Rahman is the other international recruit.
Sydney Thunder have a good batting line-up but in the absence of Khawaja, the likes of Alex Hales, Callum Ferguson and Sam Billings will need to step up. They have a decent all-round core with Daniel Sams, Ben Cutting and Chris Green providing the balance to the side. Young leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha could be the key in the bowling line-up.
Meanwhile, Chris Lynn, Jimmy Pierson and England batter Ben Duckett will be vital in the Brisbane Heat batting line-up. They boast of some good local seamers in the form of Mark Steketee, Jack Wildermuth and Cameron Gannon but Mujeeb Ur Rahman is going to be the X-factor in this bowling attack.
Alex Hales was magnificent in the BBL last time around and he could be the game-changer at the top of the order for Sydney Thunder. Mujeeb Ur Rahman is a wicket-taker and he will be the one to watch out for.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman was superb in the 2020-21 season of the BBL. He returned with 14 scalps and averaged 13.42. He had an economy rate of 6.26 and a bowling strike-rate of 12.8.
