Match Prediction – South Africa vs India, 1st ODI 2022

With the Test series between the two series finally coming to a conclusion, the focus will now switch towards limited-overs cricket. India will take on South Africa in the first of three ODIs as the second part of their tour of the Rainbow Nation commences.

South Africa will be on Cloud nine following their latest 2-1 conquest against India. While it’s true that the visitors have never won a Test series on South African soil but this Indian Test side is as formidable an opposition as it gets. They’ve been accustomed to making history on foreign tours and under difficult circumstances away from home and the hosts can be proud of the efforts they’ve put in.

The pace bowling unit of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Duanne Olivier have made the most of the conditions. Keegan Petersen, still relatively inexperienced in international cricket looks to be a star in the making. Captain Deal Elgar and senior batter Temba Bavuma have also led from the front and South Africa will look to cause another upset during the ODI series.

For India, bulk of the discussions will obviously surround Virat Kohli who dropped a bombshell by announcing his desire to give up Test captaincy. Kohli had earlier resigned from T20I captaincy following which he was unceremoniously sacked as ODI captain. This will be the 33-year-old’s first international series as a non-player and it will be interesting to see how the Indian team dynamic shapes up under a new leadership group.

The last time the senior Indian side was involved in an ODI series was against England in March 2021. On that occasion, the Men in Blue triumphed on home soil by a 2-1 margin. In the absence of Rohit Sharma who is far from fitness, KL Rahul will lead the team in this format.

The two sides have faced each other a total of 86 times in the One Day format. The Proteas have gotten the better of India 46 times while the Men in Blue have won on 35 occasions. The last ODI series scheduled between the two countries was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of COVID pandemic.

This could prove to be an interesting contest between two well-shaped teams. While South Africa will be more suited to the conditions here, India are an accomplished ODI side. Revenge for the Test series defeat will be on the minds of the visitors as will the desire to shift the focus back on to the field following a string of off-field controversies. India will be the favourites to win here.

Temba Bavuma will take up the reins in limited overs cricket for South Africa once again. The Proteas will also be able to count on Quinton de Kock who had announced his retirement from Test cricket just after the first match of the series.

For India, the series will see the return of experienced campaigners in Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal. Rahul Dravid’s side will also be looking to provide opportunities to young guns in Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan and Venkatesh Iyer among others.
