Despite being somewhat one-sided, the Afghanistan tour to Sri Lanka in 2023–2024 proved to be an interesting ODI series, especially considering the outstanding performance of the Sri Lankan team. It is now time for the T20I series after the Afghanistan side was humiliated and unable to score a comeback.
We can see changes in captaincy in Both teams, It’s Wanindu Hasaranga from Sri Lanka and Ibrahim Zadran from Afghanistan so who will win today's match between these two sides since it's the opening T20I match of the series?
Sri Lanka swept the ODI series 3-0, a credit to their formidable bowling and batting prowess on their ground. With a record-breaking 381 runs in the opening game, the team's exceptional start was highlighted and they carried that on for the rest of the series.
As the first batsman from Sri Lanka to reach two centuries in an ODI, Pathum Nissanka broke the record for most runs scored in boundaries (128) and added 210 runs to his team's total. Pramod Madushan continues to be the top wicket-taker with eight overall.
The team's blend of seasoned players and up-and-coming talent has produced a dynamic and flexible squad that can easily win the T20I series.
In the first T20I encounter, Charith Asalanka, the vice-captain for the series, is most likely to win the award for the best batter. His dependable batting in the middle order has helped Sri Lanka a lot in the past. He bats with a target to fill.
Last month Asalanka's 69 (39) runs contributed to their T20I victory against Zimbabwe. It is a fair assumption to make that the title of the best batter in the upcoming game is going to Asalanka.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Maheesh Theekshana, the superb right-arm off-break bowler from Sri Lanka, would most likely be the best bowler in the first T20I. The Afghani team is still unsure about his bowling style as they have yet to play against his deliveries.
He recently took six wickets in the T20I series against Zimbabwe last month with his cunning off-break spins. Having taken just forty wickets in T20I matches so far, he is still a young bowler and is predicted to take many more wickets in the future according to cricket odds.

Afghanistan is hoping to recover in the Twenty20 International series after suffering a terrible whitewash in the One-Day International series. Ibrahim Zadran has been appointed as the Captain and the opener batsman.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz going out during the opening powerplay of the match, as was evident in the ODI, is a significant problem that the Afghan squad has to avoid and concentrate on developing partnerships.
Afghanistan’s winning chance in the upcoming T20I match heavily relies on bowling. The bowling squad requires work, but given that Mohammad Nabi and Fareed Ahmad form a strong quad, we should expect strong bowling.
Given that he bats in the top order and is the captain, Ibrahim Zadran can perhaps be the best batter in Afghanistan. In the last T20I series vs India, he secured the lead and batted brilliantly, but couldn’t save the game.
He has amassed 699 runs in T20I cricket during his career, and he makes extremely strategic strikes on the pitch. Despite his bad performance in the ODIs, our cricket betting tips suggest that he will probably be the top batsman in the upcoming T20I.
Top Batter Stats - Recent Matches
Fareed Ahmad, a young bowler from Afghanistan, has the potential to be the best bowler in the upcoming match due to his skillful left-arm fast bowling making him tough for Sri Lanka to handle.
Notably, he conceded just 20 runs in four overs while taking three wickets in the most recent Twenty20 International encounter vs India. His well-balanced delivery should be useful to Afghanistan in the first powerplay when hitters are playing carefully.
Top Bowler Stats - Recent Matches
Pathum Nissanka is likely going to be crowned Player of the Match for his outstanding batting performance; he won Player of the Series with his 210-run innings in the opening ODI and carries the momentum.
He maintains his composure at the bat, lasting the whole innings to establish if briefly, a partnership with a middle-order player. He's probably going to take control of the 1st T20I game and win Player of the Match.
The winning side will most likely choose to field first, as we have seen from both teams in the earlier games in this ODI series, according to today's toss prediction. Afghanistan has to choose to field first and attempt to keep Sri Lanka under 150 runs in order to win.
The 1st T20I is scheduled to start in the evening around 7:00 PM on 17th February, Saturday at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium. The weather on matchday should be Mostly cloudy; a shower in spots in the morning followed by a thunderstorm in spots in the afternoon.
There is a small chance of Rain with a 42% probability of Precipitation. It's going to be cloudy with 85% cloud coverage. After 1.5 hours of rain, it should stop around the Afternoon just before the match starts. With 70% Humidity and 44 km/h Wind Gusts, the match can be interrupted by weather.
We believe Sri Lanka will prevail in the opening T20I. They have smashed records in past games, and it will be tough for Afghanistan to contain their powerful hard-hitting at their own ground. With their calm play, Sri Lanka will likely do better than Afghanistan with their calm demeanor given the less pressure.
