  • Australia won the last ODI against West Indies in July 2021 chasing down 153 runs comfortably. West Indies were bundled out for just 152 runs batting first.

AUS Vs WI Match Preview

Australia and West Indies will face each other in the first of the three-match ODI series on February 2. The match will be played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne and will commence at 9 AM IST. The two teams are locking horns in the format for the first time since July 2021.

Moreover, West Indies last played an ODI in Australia back in 2013 and will be looking to make an impact much like they did in Tests.

Meanwhile, Australia will be led by Steve Smith as their World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins, along with Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, has been rested. A new-look bowling attack will take the field for the World Champions.

On the other hand, West Indies faced England in their last ODI series and ended up winning it. The Shai Hope-led side will be keen on continuing to impress in the format.

Who will win today’s match? We will answer this question in this article next:

Australia Preview

The six-time World Cup winners Australia will take the field in ODIs for the first time since November 19, 2023 when they defeated India in the final of the World Cup.

A lot of players from that squad aren’t playing in this series but that doesn’t make it a low-key contest as young players will have a point to prove. Skipper Smith himself didn’t have a great World Cup and will be looking to score some runs in the series.

Australia Lineup
Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Steven Smith, Cameron Green, Marnus Labuschagne, Matthew Short, Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Lance Morris, Adam Zampa

Australia - Who Will Be The Best Batter?

Travis Head played two match-winning knocks in the World Cup in the semifinal and final to help Australia lift the title. The left-hander opens the innings and takes the attack to the opposition right from the word go.

He has played 64 matches in the format so far amassing 2393 runs at an average of 42 with five centuries to his name.

Australia - Who Will Be The Best Bowler?

Adam Zampa will be key for Australia in the series opener. West Indies batters are not great players of spin especially when it comes to white-ball cricket. If the surface is slow, Zampa can make a huge impact in the first ODI foxing the opposition batters at will.

He has picked up 82 wickets in 74 ODIs so far and would be eager to add more wickets to his tally.

West Indies Preview

West Indies have been playing some terrific cricket over the last few months. They defeated England in the three-match ODI series at home and also became the first team to beat Australia in the pink-ball Test recently. The visitors will be itching to punch above their weight in the 50-over format as well but they will have to play their best cricket to go past Australia.

West Indies Lineup
Justin Greaves, Alick Athanaze, Shai Hope, Keacy Carty, Kavem Hodge, Roston Chase, Romario Shepherd, Matthew Forde, Hayden Walsh, Gudakesh Motie, Oshane Thomas

West Indies - Who Will Be The Best Batter?

Shai Hope, the captain, has to lead from the front with the bat to start the series. He averages a stunning 50.81 amassing 5132 runs in 116 innings so far with 16 centuries and 25 fifties to his name.

Hope will either open the innings or bat at three and will have to carry the batting on his own in an inexperienced line-up away from home.

West Indies - Who Will Be The Best Bowler?

Alzarri Joseph is the best bowler in the squad for the West Indies. He is carrying the confidence from his excellent show in the Test series as well and will be looking to make an impact in this series too.

In only 66 ODIs, Joseph has accounted for 108 scalps and can trouble the much famed batters of the home team with his pace too.

AUS Vs WI - Who Will Be The Player Of The Match?

The aforementioned cricket betting tips will help you in determining the player of the match award winner in the first ODI. Australia are the favourites and there is every chance for Travis Head to win it in the series opener.

AUS Vs WI - Who Will Win Today's Toss?

Our toss prediction for the first ODI between Australia and West Indies is that the team winning the toss will bat first. The pitch could be on the slower side given the matches that took place in the BBL. It would be a better idea to post a total on the board and then defend it later on.

AUS Vs WI Venue, Pitch and Weather Report

MCG has hosted a mammoth 158 ODIs so far with 78 won by sides batting first. The average score here is 222 but certainly that won’t be enough for any of the teams.

The pitch is expected to be a decent one to bat but can also be on the slower side. The cricket odds will be in favour of the home side with no chances of rain during the match.

AUS Vs WI Match Winner Prediction

Australia are expected to win the first ODI and take an early lead in the series. However, expect West Indies to put up a gutsy fight only to go down in the end.
