When you think of big IPL clashes, DC vs KXIP will probably not be the first game that comes into your head. However, this could be a real game of significance in the coming years, as both teams but in particular, the Delhi Capitals, look to make their mark as they try to lift their first IPL title. Neither team have won a title yet, back in 2014 the Kings XI finished runners up in the final after winning the regular season while the Delhi Capitals have never even made it to a final, can they change that? Winning an IPL title may feel like a long way off for these two franchises right now, but it is something to work towards and focus on, which is exactly what the Capitals started to do back in 2019. They changed their name from the Delhi Daredevils to the Delhi Capitals, with the hope of changing the culture and attitude around the team.
The Capitals play their home games at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, and fans who attend regularly would love to see success come to New Delhi. Things looked a little better last season; we saw the team perform pretty well overall, although they could not reach their first-ever IPL final, something that is the aim for them moving forward into 2020.
Kings XI Punjab play their games at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, although since 2010 they have been playing selected game at Indore and Dharmsala. Their most successful season to date was back in 2014, and they would love to eventually recapture that and go one better. They won the regular season before contesting the IPL final, but that was a game they lost out in, with the Kolkata Knight Riders coming out on top to win their second title.
Away from that season, it hasn’t ben good for the team, with only one other playoff appearance to their name. Both of these teams have aspirations to be better than we have seen so far, with an IPL title the ultimate goal for them, but is that a step too far for these franchises with how they look at the moment?
KXIP was established in the year 2008. The team is jointly owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, and Karan Paul. Glenn Maxwell emerged as the costliest player for the team at a massive Rs 10.75 crores. And, the second-costliest purchase for KXIP is Sheldon Cottrell with Rs 8.50 crores. Punjab’s head coach Anil Kumble justified the expensive purchase saying the team needed firepower in the middle. KXIP also bought England player Chris Jordon for Rs 3 crores and James Neesham for Rs 50 lakh. 2014 became the best year for KXIP when it emerged as runner up.
Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals squad for IPL 2020 includes Shimron Hetmyer, bought for a whopping 7.75 crores and DC. Jason Roy and Chris Woakes at 1.50 crores each. DC also purchased an Australian wicketkeeper for 2.4 crores. The franchise is owned by the GMR Group and JSW group. Explosive batsman Gautam Gambhir had made maximum runs for DC (534 runs). Prior to the IPL auctions in 2019, Delhi Daredevils renamed as Delhi Capitals. Despite the presence of leading batsmen and bowlers, the team displayed mediocre performance over the years.
IPL has emerged as one of the most awaited events, which has generated huge interest of score of cricket lovers. KXIP tend to do very well against Delhi at home – less so when they play in Delhi. Given its an “away game” for both sides, the home form is basically irrelevant.
Delhi Capitals strength lies in the mixture of youth and old heads. Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, and Rishabh Pant form the core of their batting whilst the likes of Shikhar while Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane are the experiences needed to guide the exuberance of youth. The batting squad is theoretically strong. Take, for instance, Marcus Stoinis scoring 23, 35 and 26 in the recent T20 Internationals for Australia against England. It may be enough to earn him a place in the batting line up. The DC bowling unit looks very strong with spinners Amit Mishra, Ravi Ashwin, and Sandeep Lamichhane, and quicks led by Rabada. Incidently, Rabada is

Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Shimron Hetmyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Kagiso Rabada, Amit Mishra, Sandeep Lamichhane, Harshal Patel.
Kings KXIP Punjab is the perennial underachievers finishing outside the top four in the last five seasons, all the while having a very competitive squad. Ashwin is a loss for KXIP, but they do have options in Chris Jordan and Sheldon Cottrell. Jordan had a great series against both Australia and Pakistan in the T20I’s, and Sheldon Cottrell performed well for the Patriots in the CPL 2020 Tournament.

There are some key points to consider in this match:
Generally speaking, these two teams have spent most of their time evenly matched and towards the bottom of the IPL standings. When you take a look at the overall DC vs KXIP head to head record, you will see that they have been closely matched in the past, although one team does have a slight advantage. The figures below include when the Delhi Capitals were previously called the Delhi Daredevils to give the whole picture when you weigh up what has happened between these two franchises.
Games played: 26
Delhi Capitals wins: 11
Kings XI Punjab wins: 15
As you can see from the above figures, there is little to choose between these two teams although the Kings XI do have a slight advantage with 14 wins compared to the 10 that Delhi has picked up. It is worth noting that the gap between these two teams has only really come over the past few seasons. Before their victory last season, Delhi had lost their previous four games against Kings XI Punjab which helped the Kings XI pull away in the head to head standings.

Delhi Capitals and Punjab played out one of the all-time classics in the 2nd Match of the 2020 IPL tournament. It was all going so well for KXIP until Marcus Stoinis entered the arena in the 15th over with DC at 5/93. Scoring 53 off 21 balls, Stoinis took 30 runs off Jordans’ last over and 14 off Sheldon Cottrell’s. Shami (3-15 off 4 overs) and Bishnoi (1-22 off 4 overs) were the best bowlers for KXIP.
If KXIP thought the last few overs of their bowling couldn’t have gone any worse boy were they wrong. At 5-55 off 10 overs, it was game over for KXIP. The DC bowlers led by Patel were on fire, and the Kings needed a miracle. However, it is the IPL and miracles happen regularly. Scoring Mayank Agarwal 89 off 60 balls, he went for glory with 2 balls spare but holed out to Hetmyer in the deep. With only one run needed off the final ball, Stoinis collected his 2nd wicket is as many balls to send the match into a super over.
As much as the regular 20 overs was incredible – the super over was not. Batting first KXIP scored the lowest super overs runs in IPL history giving DC a miserable target of just 3 runs to win. Pooran finished the match with a pair of ducks and were KXIP confined to an opening loss. If Maxwell can score runs and Jordan bowl properly at the death, the KXIP should make the top 4.
The DC vs KXIP 2019 meeting was a very close affair, with the Delhi Capitals coming out on top by a small margin. The Kings XI went into bat first, and they put 163/7 on the board from 20 overs, mainly thanks to Chris Gayle scoring 69 from 37 balls to get his team off to the best possible start at the top of the order. Sandeep Lamichhane did his best to slow down the Kings XI with his bowling; he took three wickets on the day despite conceding runs at ten an over.
In the second innings, it was two players who scored half-centuries which helped the Delhi Capitals to victory. Man of the match Shreyas Iyer was the one to finish things off, he scored an unbeaten 58 from 49 deliveries. Helping him defeat the Kings XI was Shikhar Dhawan, who scored 56 runs from 41 balls in the win, which came with two balls to spare but Delhi never looked in too much trouble throughout their innings, you always believed that they would get there. Hardus Viljoen was the one shining light of the Kings Xi Punjab attack, taking two wickets in the game from his four overs, but it was not enough to slow down the Capitals and prevent them from winning.
After the first meeting of the 2019 season was won by Kings XI Punjab at home, the Delhi Capitals won their home game to even things up. That was the first season since the name change, so the Capitals are tied at 1-1 with the Kings XI coming into the new season.
While both teams have aspirations to do better, it is unlikely they will both improve enough for that. If it is the Capitals that push on and perform to an even higher standard next year, then it is the games like this one they need to be winning. Instead of tying the season series, they will be looking to win both games against Punjab in 2020.
Last season was the first since the name change by Delhi, and they ended the season with a 1-1 tie in the series of games. If they are serious when it comes to mounting an IPL title challenge, winning games against the likes of Kings XI Punjab will become a necessity. Those who want to join the elite in Indian cricket are capable of beating the lower-ranked teams more often than not, something Delhi need to add to their game.
With things relatively even overall, can either team pull clear, win some games and mount a serious IPL title challenge?
KXIP and DC faced each other twice in 2019. KXIP won the first match by 14 runs. In the match, DC had won the toss and elected to bowl first. Batting first, KXIP scored 166 runs in 20 overs. David Miller scored 43 runs off 30 balls, Sarfaraz Khan, and Mandeep Singh made 39 and 29 respectively. Chasing the target, the entire team of DC bundled up at 152 thus awarding the match to KXIP. Rishabh Pant was the leading run-getter with 39 runs off 26 deliveries. Collin Ingram scored 38 and Shikhar Dhawan made 30 runs. It was a miserable show by DC as none of the players could last for a long time at the crease. The match was played at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium. Sam Curran of KXIP was declared the player of the match. The captain Ravichandran Ashwin gave major credit to Curran and Shami for bowling brilliantly in the tight match. The crowd in Mohali went berserk when they saw their team winning in the thriller match.
The second match between KXIP and DC was played on April 20. In the match, DC had won the toss and decided to field first. KXIP scored 163 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allocated 20 overs. Gautam Gambhir scored 55 in 42 balls and became the leading scorer. Rishabh Pant and Chris Morris scored 28 and 27 runs respectively. Dan Christian, Rahul Tewatia, and Chris Morris claimed one wicket each. Chasing the small total of 166, KXIP did not face any difficulty and chased it in 18th over. K.L. Rahul was the top scorer with his explosive 51 off just 16 deliveries. Karun Nair made his half-century in 33 deliveries. David Miller scored 24 runs. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin scalped 2 wickets each. KXIP won the match by 6 wickets. KL Rahul became the player of the match.
Meanwhile, KXIP won the second match by 4 runs. DC had won the toss and decided to bowl first. KXIP scored a target of 143 runs for 8 wickets.
